It is barely two months since the news of Professor Rontgen’s striking experiments was received with scepticism. To many it was looked upon as a journalistic hoax, and it was ridiculed pretty freely in the photographic and other journals…
…Professor Rontgen found that when passing the discharge from a large induction coil through a well exhausted Crooke’s or similar vacuum tube, a particular class of rays or emanations was given off which differed in some respects from any before known to the scientific world. While invisible to eyesight, they had the power of penetrating through all substances to a greater or lesser extent…
…The principal difference between the new and the old radiations appears to lie in the fact that the latter, which are known as cathodic rays, can be deflected by magnets, while the former, which for the present are spoken of as x-rays cannot be so deflected.
