TATA gets Torotrak traction

Under the terms of the licence, the agreement grants Tata non-exclusive rights to develop and manufacture transmissions containing Torotrak’s technology for incorporation and sale in TATA branded and co-branded products.

The licence covers use of the Torotrak technology in four fields of application - passenger cars, light commercial vehicles, medium & heavy commercial vehicles, and construction equipment. It also allows Tata to manufacture and sell transmissions to other customers of Torotrak in the Indian market.

James Batchelor, commercial director at Torotrak, said: ‘We are delighted to have secured Tata Motors as a new licensee for Torotrak’s technology. Tata Motors is one of the most ambitious and forward thinking Indian companies and we are very much looking forward to working with the Tata Motors teams in India and the UK as they use our technology to help with the realisation of their global ambitions.’

Torotrak’s CEO Dick Elsy said: ‘I’m very pleased that we have secured this important new licensee in the automotive and commercial vehicle sector. This agreement marks an important milestone for Torotrak – our first licensee in fast growing emerging markets.’

Torotrak manufactures full-toroidal traction-drive transmission technology, focused on the development of infinitely variable transmission (IVT) and toroidal continuously variable transmission (TCVT) systems. They are used in car, truck, bus, outdoor power equipment, agricultural, off-highway and ancillary drive applications.
