I am always struck by the apparent gap between the amazing hi-tech devices and weapons being developed for the UK military and what you hear about life on the ground for the average soldier.
If we go by The Engineer then the squaddies' life will soon be made so much safer by avoidance and safety systems of every kind, while his enemies will be blasted by robot planes and remote-controlled missiles.
Yet every time I open my paper or watch the TV news there are stories about soldiers who have to scrounge for toilet paper from the Americans and get basic clothing sent out by their families.
And to cap it all, we have just spent tens of millions of pounds on helicopters that will never fly.
It seems to me that as far as the military is concerned all this gadgetry is a matter of running before you can walk.
