The MAN B&W 6S80ME-C9 engines will be built by Hyundai’s Engine Division, HHI-EMD. Hyundai’s Ship-Building Division (HHI-SBD) will deliver 13 of the engines and Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries (HSHI) will deliver the remaining five during 2011 and 2012.
The S-type engines will have a low speed of 78rpm (revolutions per minute), which Maersk claims gives a significant increase in propulsion efficiency, thereby contributing to fuel economy and reduced CO2 emissions.
In addition, Maersk has specified the use of waste-heat recovery technology on each engine, which enables the company to reuse excess exhaust heat to generate energy for onboard electricity consumption.
On delivery, the 4,500 TEU (20-foot equivalent units) container ships are intended for service in the sub-Saharan, African market.
