Since 1950, the Atomic Weapons Establishment has been central to the defence of the United Kingdom – providing and maintaining the warheads for the country’s nuclear deterrent. As one of the nation’s largest high-tech research, development and production facilities, we house some of the world’s most advanced experimental facilities and one of the largest supercomputers in existence.
The scale and scope of our work calls for expertise in practically every area of science and engineering, as well as areas like facilities management, procurement, safety & quality and the environment. But our craftspeople and front line workers have an equally important role to play. As do those in business and administration.
Salaries obviously depend on the role and the experience you bring. But rest assured they’re competitive and regularly reviewed to reflect your performance and professional development. Many roles offer relocation assistance. And everyone at AWE is eligible to join our final-salary pension scheme the day they join.
But of course, there’s more to a good package than just financial rewards. We believe in getting the work-life balance right and realise you’ll have other commitments and interests outside work. That’s why, on top of 28 days’ annual holiday (in addition to the 8 statutory holidays in England) we offer considerable flexibility when it comes to the hours you work.
Then, of course, there’s the environment itself. Both Aldermaston and Burghfield are set in beautiful countryside and have a wide range of onsite facilities, including a recreation society offering cricket, football, tennis, squash – even a theatre. They are also easily accessible from Reading, Newbury, Basingstoke and London.

AWE promotes diversity in employment. We welcome applications from women and men, regardless of disability, sexual orientation, racial or ethnic origin, or age. Applications from women and ethnic minorities are particularly encouraged. Successful candidates will be selected solely on their ability to carry out the duties of the post. The normal contractual retirement age at AWE is 65.
Because of the nature of work associated with these posts, they are subject to special nationality rules and are open only to British citizens. All selected candidates will be required to undergo security clearance.
