The Submarine Solutions business unit is a key component of BAE Systems naval activities. It comprises the shipyard at Barrow in Furness, designated as a submarine centre of excellence, the Astute team and Swiftsure/Trafalgar class update teams at Farnborough and Weymouth, and the Astute and Swiftsure /Trafalgar class integration facilities at Ash Vale.
Astute Class Submarine
BAE Systems Submarine Solutions is currently building the Astute Class of submarine under a contract worth around £2 billion. BAE Systems is responsible for the design, build and initial in-service support of four Astutes, with the potential of future orders.
The construction of HMS Astute, HMS Ambush, HMS Artful and HMS Audacious is underway. When the Astute Class enters service, they will be the largest and most powerful nuclear attack submarines ever built for the Royal Navy.
Upholder Submarine
In addition the team was responsible for the successful reactivation of the four former Royal Navy SSK Upholder class submarines for the Canadian Navy.

The Barrow shipyard has also completed the Royal Navy assault ship Bulwark, which was delivered to the Royal Navy in the Summer of 2004, sister ship to Albion delivered in 2003
