Algeria’s Entreprise du Métro d’Alger (EMA) has signed two contracts with Alstom and its partners to supply turnkey tramway systems for the cities of Oran and Constantine.
Alstom says it will receive €326m from the two projects, which are worth a total of €662m.
The contract for the city of Oran calls for an 18km line, serving 32 stations. Alstom will supply 30 Citadis trams, which will be manufactured at the group’s factory in Barcelona, Spain. The first trainsets will enter service 26 months after the contract takes effect.
The Constantine contract will see the construction of an 8km line serving 11 stations. Alstom will supply 27 Citadis tramways, the track, electrical power supply, operating system (signalling and telecommunications) and the depot equipment. The trams will be manufactured at the group’s factory in La Rochelle, France and will enter service 27 months after the contract takes effect.
These projects are said to form part of the Algerian government’s development programme to respond to the growing need for public transport.
