Taking place on Friday July 29th, the 2nd annual Open Day will see the Institution teaming up with the likes of the BBC, Bosch, Shell, ITN and the V&A Museum. The event is designed to highlight the important roles engineers play in everyday life, with participating venues and organisations demonstrating the creativity and excitement behind engineering careers.

“We’re excited to host an event for the IET’s Engineering Open House Day this summer,” said Alastair Johnstone, UK MD at Bosch Rexroth.

“It will be an excellent opportunity to showcase some of the fantastic opportunities that a job in the engineering sector can hold. Engineering Open House Day is a truly great initiative which we hope will inspire and encourage a diverse mix of children to consider a career in the industry.”

According to the IET, almost three-quarters (71 per cent) of children say they would be interested in an engineering career when shown inspirational information about the creativity and opportunities the sector provides. Through a combination of tours, workshops and talks, the Open House Day aims to show both youngsters and their parents that engineering is an excellent career choice for both boys and girls alike.

“Many parents, particularly those with daughters, aren’t aware of how many different types of engineering jobs there are – and that these jobs can be creative, rewarding, and make a real difference to people’s lives,” said IET President Naomi Climer.

“Engineering Open House Day is a great way to show parents and young people the diverse variety of exciting engineering careers on offer all over the country, while also celebrating the valuable work that engineers do every day.”
