Light speed ahead: LED makeover for Cardiff racecar

Sedna Lighting has teamed up with Cardiff University to transform its Formula Student racecar using a range of flexible LED lighting.

Cardiff-based Sedna is a sponsor of the team and wanted to create a project that would showcase its flexible LED strip range, while simultaneously highlighting the engineering talent of the university. Designers from Cardiff University and Cardiff Metropolitan University were involved, with 1,500 individual LEDs used on the car.

“We were very pleased and overwhelmed by the volume of interest students of both universities expressed to that project,” said Mariya Fuijkschot, community engagement executive, at Sedna.

“At Sedna we believe in self-development and were glad to offer the young minds of the future this remarkable opportunity to gain exciting experience within their disciplines. This project will definitely make their CVs stand out in the future as well as give them a chance to push their skills to an entirely new level via working with unique materials in a different environment.”

Once the makeover was completed, the CR12 series car was put through its paces in the dark around its home test track at Llandow, with filmmakers from the university capturing the event on video.

“We wanted to help Cardiff Racing raise their profile, attract potential new sponsors as well as demonstrate our products in an unconventional way,” said Nathan Edwards, technical sales manager at Sedna. “Between our two teams we are confident we achieved all aims set-out.”
