Meet the engineers

Editor

One of the great pleasures of working on The Engineer is the sheer variety of fascinating people and projects we encounter. And while we do our best to bring these subjects to life on our website and in the magazine it’s clear from your letters and comments that many of you would relish the opportunity to get even closer to the big stories and put your own questions to the engineers involved.

Which is why we have decided to launch our very own live event — which will enable you to hear these stories first-hand and tap into the expertise of some of the UK’s leading engineers.

Taking place at the Birmingham NEC during the first week of June 2013, and running alongside the Advanced Manufacturing and Subcon exhibitions, The Engineer conference will showcase the technology and individuals that are helping to shape the UK’s manufacturing future.

We hope to have some fascinating speakers from both of the UK’s biggest and most exciting emerging engineering sectors. There will be panel discussions, interviews and plenty of opportunity for you to put your questions to our presenters.

We’re currently working on a line-up of subjects and presenters, and are hoping to be able to announced some big names early in the New Year. But before we finalise our line-up we wanted to give readers the opportunity to help shape our program. Who would you like to see? What issues would you like to see covered? As always, we look forward to reading your suggestions. More details will follow in the new year on how to register for this exciting event.

In the meantime, we’re delighted to bring you the latest digital edition of The Engineer magazine. As we all reflect on another year of fluctuating fortunes for UK industry, this issue shines the spotlight on some of the technologies and companies that will be making waves in the months and years ahead — we hope you enjoy it.
