Cementing the deal

ABB has won two contracts worth a total of $21 million to build power systems to link a new cement plant to Mexico’s national grid.

The contracts were awarded by Mexican company Cementos Cruz Azul and the German firm Polysius, which have overall responsibility for constructing the cement plant in the state of Puebla. It will produce 3,000 tons of clinker daily.

Under the contracts, ABB will build an air-insulated substation and a transmission line of 400 kV, and a 400 kV and 100 MVA gas-insulated substation.

According to ABB, the gas-insulated substation can step up output as the plant’s production needs increase, which will ensure that the customer has a reliable power supply for further expansion of the plant.

The main equipment will be manufactured at ABB plants in Mexico, Spain, Switzerland and Sweden. The project will start immediately is scheduled to end in 12 months.
