Cobham evolution

Aerospace and defence system specialist Cobham has merged three of its companies under one brand name as part of a wider rebranding programme which began in September 2008.

ERA Technology, Culham Lightning and Vector Fields are the latest three companies to be brought under the new name of Cobham Technical Services.

ERA Technology, based in Leatherhead, offers design, development and consultancy services across a range of markets including electronics, communications systems, antenna technology, safety and EMC.

Culham Lightning of Abingdon focuses on the problems related to the direct and indirect effects of lightning strikes. The company provides consultancy and testing services to clients in aerospace and other sectors including wind power and oil and gas.

In the past Culham Lightning has made significant contributions to lightning standards and best practices used in industries such as aerospace.

Vector Fields, which has bases in Oxford and Aurora, Illinois in the US, produces advanced design automation software for modelling and analysing electromagnetic equipment and effects.

The business uses its virtual prototyping and optimisation tools with the aim of speeding time-to-market in a range of applications such as communications products, systems, motors, loudspeakers and particle beam machines.

Paul McCarter, general manager of Cobham Technical Services, said: ‘In an increasingly competitive and international market, aligning three successful businesses under the name Cobham Technical Services is going to make it easier for our customers and employees to understand the breadth of capabilities and opportunities available to them from across Cobham.

‘This is an evolution of a successful growing business, with our great products and services now provided under the brand of a FTSE 100 company.’

Wimborne, Dorset-based Cobham, which claims revenues of £1.5bn, employs approximately 12,500 people worldwide and has customers in more than 100 countries.
