Dong launches Thames Estuary wind farm

Danish energy company Dong Energy has inaugurated its Gunfleet Sands wind farm, located in the Thames Estuary off the Essex coast.

The first power from the wind farm was transmitted to shore in August 2009 and the entire wind farm, which has a total capacity of 172MW, went into production in March 2010.

Dong Energy is heavily involved in the production and expansion of renewable energy in the UK.

The company is involved in building the three major offshore wind farms, including what will be the world’s largest offshore wind farm, London Array (630 MW), which is due to be commissioned in 2013

Two other wind farms, Walney (367MW) and Lincs (270MW) are scheduled for completion in 2011. The company owns 74.9 per cent, 25 per cent and 50 per cent of Walney, Lincs and the London Array, respectively.

In addition, the company currently operates the offshore wind farms Burbo Bank (90MW) and Barrows (90MW). Burbo Bank is wholly owned by Dong Energy, while Barrows is owned jointly by Dong Energy and Centrica.
