Fuel cells join the forces
Quantum Fuel System Technologies has been awarded a contract by the US Army TARDEC-NAC (National Automotive Centre) to develop and demonstrate a hydrogen fuel-cell powered light-duty, special operations vehicle.
At its Advanced Vehicle Concept Centre in Lake Forest, CA, Quantum will develop the chassis and body of the vehicle, integrate the fuel-cell power module, design the electric drive system and the hydrogen fuel storage and delivery system, as well as develop the operational and maintenance documentation.
The US Army has the option to expand the project to include a refuelling system designed by Quantum.
Earlier in the year, Quantum was selected for a substantial award by the US Department of Energy to develop methods to safely store enough hydrogen on board a vehicle to enable it to travel 300 miles before refuelling.
Part of that project also included a co-operative effort with the Oak Ridge National Laboratory to develop safety monitoring systems for hydrogen-based vehicles.
