Fujitsu and Sagem collaborate on 3G
Fujitsu and Sagem have reached an agreement to jointly develop basic technologies for third-generation (3G) mobile phones.
The agreement between the two will allow the companies to share their know-how for the development of basic technologies that will be the cornerstone of dual-mode smart phone development.
More specifically, joint development will focus on technologies for a new communication platform that enables dual-mode capability and an application platform necessary to run various multimedia functions.
Fujitsu will engage in application platform development in Japan, while Sagem will focus on the development of a communications platform in France. The two partners will share research resources, including the exchange of research talent.
Fujitsu and Sagem plan to introduce new technologies for 3G handsets by the latter half of 2003. Furthermore, both companies intend to jointly conduct interoperability testing for international roaming, which is expected to be necessary for 3G handsets in Europe and Japan.
