As part of the review, Atkins will assess the challenges facing various types of transport serving the region and whether there is a case for improvement.
Atkins will also look at case studies of transport systems delivered elsewhere in the
Dave Duthie, HITRANS director, said: ‘Transport planning and delivery across the highlands and islands is carried out by a range of national, regional and local authorities and agencies.
‘These arrangements have secured a range of positive benefits for communities across the region in recent years.
‘However, with the government’s approval of the Regional Transport Strategy, it is the right time to assess whether the same arrangements will be the most effective and efficient in delivering the key interventions and service improvements that the highlands and islands need to support economic development, tackle social exclusion and address the challenges we all face in tackling climate change.’
