Integrated blade design at the push of a button
AEA Technology has announced an improvement in blade design software: CFX-BladeGen is a specialised easy-to-use three-dimensional software tool for the rapid design of rotating machinery components.
A unique feature of the software is its 'Plus' module which enables rapid 3-D viscous flow screening of the design through an embedded and fully automated computational fluid dynamics (CFD) solver. This permits early pre-selection of profiles and reduces the number of iterations needed to develop optimum blade design.
George BachÃ©, from AEA Technology, said: 'This is a major improvement in blade design software, designers can now evaluate realistic geometry and physics in timeframes that fit well within typical design cycles. Used appropriately, it can save time and money in both design and manufacturing processes. Engineers are now, for the first time, able to fully integrate three-dimensional blade design, computational fluid dynamics and computer aided design.'
The software can be used for axial, mixed-flow and radial blades in applications such as pumps, compressors, fans, blowers, turbines, expanders, turbochargers and inducers.
New technology means that minimal knowledge of computational fluid dynamics is required because functions such as 3D-model generation and post processing are simplified and automated. However, more detailed applications are also possible, allowing the most minute details in blade design to be evaluated.
The software can use a wide variety of data sources, including line drawings, IGES and generic data files. CFX-BladeGen exports to CAD/CAM through IGES, DXF or ibl.
