Pacific satellite communications

Cobham has teamed up with Marlink to provide a satellite communications capability to support Project Kaisei’s research into the North Pacific Gyre.

Project Kaisei is being run by the Ocean Voyages Institute to seek viable solutions to the problems associated with marine litter in the region.

The satellite capability provided by Cobham and Marlink is expected allow the team to document its expedition via the internet so that its findings can be made public as it progresses on its journey.

To do this, Cobham SATCOM has supplied Project Kaisei with a 4006RZ communications antenna that will allow the Kaisei group to access voice and internet connectivity through airtime provided by Marlink, which has also donated a satellite modem and voiceover internet protocol (VoIP) adapter.

Ryan Yerkey, chief of operations for Project Kaisei and director of Ocean Voyages Institute, said: ‘Project Kaisei/Ocean Voyages Institute is extremely excited and thankful to have Cobham SATCOM partnering with us on this important mission.

‘The amazing equipment and assistance it has supplied is the determining factor in our ability to reach the peoples of the world with real-time updates from the Pacific.’
