Sony DVD player takes a shine to blue light

Sony has announced the commercial launch of the world's first DVD player to use blue-laser optical technology.
The company said its Blu-Ray player/recorder will offer almost five times the storage capacity of conventional DVDs.
Sony has worked with a consortium of rival electronics giants such as Sharp, Pioneer and Philips for several years to develop the potential of blue lasers as an optical storage technology.
Because of its shorter wavelength, blue light can read and store data at much higher densities than the red laser-based devices in use now.
The Blu-Ray player will go on sale in Japan from April with a price tag of about £2,500.
