UK-based renewables and CCS projects apply for EU funding

Fourteen UK projects have applied for funding from the EU’s New Entrant Reserve (NER) scheme to support carbon capture and storage (CCS) and renewable projects across the EU.
Of the 14 applications received, nine were for CCS projects and five for innovative renewables.
Of the CCS applications, seven are to capture CO2 from coal-fired power stations and two are to capture emissions from gas-fired plants. Two are retrofits to existing power stations and the other seven are new power plants providing additional energy supply capacity.
According to the Department of Energy and Climate Change, the government has until 9 May this year to assess the applications against both the NER — a fund worth between €4.5bn and €9bn (£3.8bn and £7.6bn) — and UK criteria before deciding which to put forward to the European Investment Bank for further consideration.
Energy minister Charles Hendry said: ‘Cleaner fossil-fuel technologies present a huge opportunity for the UK and could potentially support up to 100,000 jobs in the country by 2030.’
