There is a balance to be struck here. The learners need to fully grasp the basics of science, maths, etc. to give them a solid foundation to build on. Good teaching in any case will tend to use real life examples to help gain understanding. What needs to be avoided is a curriculum that waters down the time to teach the basics by prescribing the study of a wide range of topics, thus 'spreading the butter too thin'. Once the basics are mastered, exploration into wider ranging issues can be made more effectively.
