c allen - you are ignoring several key points about rail travel. business travel makes up 20% of the rail market , the population is set to imncrease and people are choosing rail over road so you are also ignoring modal shift. and chris eaglen birmingham is the second largest city and is also more or less in the middle of england. and as for someone saying birmingham isnt on the way to scotland well it is by the my and the west coast main line ! and presumably a flight from heathrow to edinburgh would not pass over the city by a very large distance !
