IMechE calls on UK government to support electricity storage

Comment

JohnK is correct, but when was the last one built? From memory, it was Dinorwig, in 1970. And it was expensive in civil engineering work, and it is only in mountainous areas (i.e. Wales & Scotland) where you can have a high lake and a low lake close together. Second, "anonymous" is correct that energy involves time as well as power. Pump storage systems like Dinorwig supply sufficient energy to cater for the peak demand when lots of people turn on a kettle to make coffee after an international football match ends, but they can't provide the same demand for very long. With gas, we have 22 days' worth. With electricity, sweet FA.
