Sorry Rod, I find your statement that "it is an unjustified belief that we will find a realistic answer" seems like a pretty unjustified belief in itself, as is the assumption that the planet will become "uninhabitable" as if (even it was beginning to happen) society would just sit around waiting to fall off a cliff. Modern fuels of all types are far cleaner that fuels of old (wood, coke) - and are open to technologies of small and large scales that can pro actively or reactively solve any problems with them. That's what engineers do! Otherwise if we assume that things 'frequently' (?) and eventually go wrong - we may as well just batten down the hatches and pray.
