Why do you quote the Tristar (certainly good) and the DC10 (certainly cheap)? These American products were second generation, me-too examples of engineering by the likes of Vickers (VC10) and BAC (1-11 models). What’s more, the first of the lot, the Comet, had incorporated engine housings. As so often, British engineering showed the world how it should be done. But I do share you enthusiasm for dirigibles. Had we had a decent heavy lifter 30 years ago, the Falklands war could have been avoided.
