It is right that the US are involved. They have a phrase for carbon trading, offsetting etc and it's called "passing the buck". Any group of rich countries, or companies, can simply buy their way out of ACTUALLY reducing carbon themselves. The situation of global warming and diminishing fossil fuel supplies is as serious as war-time food shortages. The most direct and fair way to reduce emissions is to ration take-off slots or to have fixed aircraft landing taxes WHATEVER THE DISTANCE THEY HAVE FLOWN. This would put the greatest cost on unnecessary local holiday flights or flights where, nowadays, fast trains are a better alternative. ETS would be a political and administrative nightmare.
