Smelter contract

GE Energy has signed a $200m service contract with Emirates Aluminium (EMAL) for the world’s largest single aluminium smelter complex located near Al Taweelah in Abu Dhabi.

GE Energy has signed a $200m (£134m) service contract with Emirates Aluminium (EMAL) for the world’s largest single aluminium smelter complex located near Al Taweelah in Abu Dhabi.

The multi-year contractual agreement (CSA) will see GE Energy improve the long-term productivity of EMAL’s gas turbines, which are equipped with advanced emission control technologies to help it meet the environmental standards set by the Abu Dhabi Environmental Agency.

The initial phase of the aluminium smelter project will have an installed capacity of over 2,000MW for use in the production of 700,000 tonnes of aluminium per year, with the final phase increasing this capacity to 1.4 million tonnes.

‘The Middle East is one of the most important growth areas for GE Energy in the world today,’ said John Krenicki, GE vice chairman and president of GE Energy Infrastructure. ‘Since the end of 2006, we have announced more than $8bn in equipment and service agreements across the Middle East with over 1,000 gas turbines installed.’

Last year, GE Energy announced that it would be supplying Frame 9FA gas turbines, C7 steam turbines, heat recovery steam generators and condensers for the complex. Shipping of the equipment has already begun with a view to begin operations in April 2010.
