$170 million GSM network flies into Indonesia

Motorola’s Global Telecom Solutions Sector has signed an agreement to supply GSM 900 and GSM 1800 network infrastructure services and equipment to Indonesia’s leading mobile operator, Telkomsel.

The first phase of the deployment is estimated to be worth $170 million and will be completed by December 2002.

Currently the largest cellular operator in Indonesia with over 3 million subscribers and a 48% market share, Telkomsel plans to deploy this network expansion in the regions of Jabotabek, West Java and Kalimantan.

With this agreement, Motorola will become the largest supplier of base stations to Telkomsel. Turnkey services, including site acquisition, installation, integration and network optimisation, will all be provided by Motorola personnel.

In a separate agreement, Motorola has been selected as the only vendor to provide a GPRS trial to Telkomsel in the city of Jakarta.
