195 million Euros in the post

Siemens’ Logistics and Assembly Systems Group has won a major order from the Swiss Post to supply automation systems for three new mail sorting centers and six subcentres in Switzerland.

Siemens’ Logistics and Assembly Systems Group (L&A) has won a major order from the Swiss Post to supply automation systems for three new mail sorting centers and six subcentres in Switzerland.

The order, worth around 195 million Euros, is the biggest order ever placed by the Swiss Post with Siemens.

The postal service in Switzerland is undergoing extensive modernisation and upgrading, and by 2008 the number of automated sorting centers will be cut from eighteen to three with six auxiliary subcentres. The first and largest centre in Zurich, which is also the centre for international mail, is expected to be in operation by the end of 2006. The locations of the other two sorting centers have not been decided.

The order calls for Siemens to supply letter sorting systems, automatic centralized address reading systems, mail tray conveyors, fully automated warehouses for mail trays, process control and production data acquisition systems, as well as an IT system.

In recent years, Siemens L&A has supplied Swiss Post with automation technology and IT solutions worth some 60 million Euros.
