Manhattan Scientific’s German-based NovArs unit has successfully developed and tested a small, ultra-light 3kW fuel cell system.
Because of its lightweight and compact size, the proprietary fuel cell system is highly portable. This makes it suitable for small vehicles such as electric scooters, golf carts as well as emergency home generators, RVs and other recreational use such as camping.
The new hydrogen-fuelled 3kW system is based on the basic design and concept of a previously announced NovArs fuel cell system currently being tested by Electrolux (US), Aprilia, SpA and the US Army.
The fuel cell uses advanced composite materials to minimise size and weight. The total system including fans, valves, electronics, cables and tubes weighs 5.9 kilograms (13 pounds). The unit with all peripherals, not including the hydrogen source, measures 340 mm x 246 mm x 158 mm (13.4in x 9.7in x 6.2in).
Versions of this configuration can be scaled down from 3,000W to 1,000W to fit a wide range of market needs.
