Voice-activated systems are expected to take over from keyboard and other input devices in the future and it is good to know engineers will not be left behind. A recent system, GMS VoiceCAD by Ground Modelling Systems, is designed to be used with AutoCAD. All that is needed is a two-minute enrolment for each new speaker.

The advantages are that there is no clutter of icon strips or delving down through menus to find a command. Productivity is increased because a mouse can be used to pick and draw while issuing voice commands.

Numeric data, such as angles, distances and co-ordinates can be quickly dictated onto the command line using continuous speech. The engineer can also dictate freely into any database field or onto the command line, speeding up the creation and editing of attribute data and drawing text.
