A different approach to violin manufacture

Perspex cast acrylic may not be the first material to come to mind for the manufacture of violins, but so successful has a Sheffield instrument maker been that it has now become his full time occupation.

Former service engineer Ted Brewer makes the instrument bodies from either acrylic or a combination of wood and acrylic. The choice of Perspex offers several advantages. Using 200mm and 25mm thick cast acrylic block – supplied by Vink Plastics – gives total design flexibility in a material which can be fabricated with conventional woodworking tools.
