Academy established in Birmingham

Birmingham City University’s Technology Innovation Centre has signed a £11.4m agreement to become the sole UK-based academy for PTC

Birmingham City University’s Technology Innovation Centre (TIC) has signed a £11.4m agreement to become the sole UK-based academy for multinational product lifecycle management solution company  PTC (Parametric Technologies Corp).

PTC supplies business software solutions to US government departments and international business. Under the agreement, TIC will deliver product design programmes using PTC’s solutions in the UK and further afield.

The three-year agreement enables TIC to offer PTC’s product design and lifecycle management solutions to higher education and business markets in Europe for research and product development.

TIC will deliver the required skills through three approaches.

The PTC Academy-led ‘Green-by-Design’ product development links product design through manufacturing processes to life in-service until it the product reaches the end of its life and can be recycled.

The second approach uses digital tools, to generate a virtual product design to provide information to sustain the product’s efficient use throughout its service life.

The third effort delivers ICT (information and communication technology) skills to support correct understanding and use of the toolset.

BirminghamCityUniversity’s vice chancellor and TIC chairman, Prof David Tidmarsh, said: ‘Our academy partnership with PTC accords with our mission to provide the highest-quality learning experience for students and our commitment to being an exemplar in working with business, the community and the professions.’
