Alcatel Wins a GSM Network Contract In Cambodia

CamGSM, a joint venture of Millicom (Luxembourg) and Royal Group (Cambodia), has awarded Alcatel with a frame contract for the expansion of the MobiTel GSM 900 network in Cambodia. The contract, won in open tender conditions, is valued at 63 million US dollars.

The contract was signed by Okhna Meng Kith, Chairman Royal Group and Olivier Picard, Vice President Alcatel Asia Pacific, in the presence of Samdech Hun Sen, Cambodia’s Prime Minister.

With this expansion the network will be able to serve some 180,000 subscribers by the end of 2000.

Alcatel will supply its EVOLIUM global mobile solution featuring GSM base stations (BTS), micro-based stations and base station controllers (BSC), as well as an additional mobile switching center (MSC) of a 100,000 subscribers capacity and the necessary microwave transmission systems.

The contract also foresees the provision of a Voice Mail System (VMS), a Short Message Service Center (SMSC), and an Intelligent Network platform (IN) capable of offering Value Added Services such as Prepaid Card (almost 95% of the users).

Alcatel already signed an initial frame contract with CamGSM for 3 years in October 1996. This was valued at 20 million US dollars. The MobiTel network is serving 80% of the mobile subscribers in Cambodia.
