Alternative family of materials

Piezoelectrics provide actuation solutions in many areas of design, but designers are denied materials with the best properties because of their reliance on highly toxic lead oxide.

Now researchers at MIT report that they have identified an effective alternative family of materials. The lead-free piezoelectrics not only exhibit a high piezoelectric response, but can also be easily grown as single crystals, which have inherently better performance than materials made of multiple crystals.

MIT’s work has also shown that continuous single crystal piezoelectric fibres can be grown.
