EADS Defence and Security has secured a multi-million euro contract to supply electronic components to the new communications system of the German Armed Forces.
The contract from the Federal Office for Information Management and Information Technology of the Bundeswehr (IT-AmtBw) covers the development of a broadband module for a new generation of radio terminals.
The ultra-high-frequency technology is expected to enable high data rates, long ranges and an improved level of resistance to jamming. It forms part of a programme to improve the German Armed Forces’ mobile voice and data communications over the next 10 years.
Bernd Wenzler, chief executive of EADS Defence Electronics, said: ‘Secure radio communications are a necessary precondition for protecting our soldiers, especially during operations abroad. Thanks to our experience with ultra-high-frequency equipment and the use of new technologies - for example, on the basis of gallium nitride - we are in a position to offer an excellent solution for the most complex component of the new radio system.’
The broadband module is thought to be one of the most challenging elements of the radio system due to its large bandwidth. EADS has provided similar radio frequency components to NATO’s data-link programme and has specialised production facilities in Munich, Ulm and Friedrichshafen.
