BAE Systems has awarded Thales UK a contract to supply its Sonar 2076 system for the Royal Navy’s fourth Astute class submarine.
The £18m contract involves the delivery of a complete sonar system, comprising of inboard and outboard equipment and inboard processing hardware and software.
The order comes after modifications were made to the Sonar 2076 system, including the open architecture Stage 5 design and addition of the Thin Flank array, which is currently in the demonstration phase.
Ed Lowe, vice-president of Thales UK’s naval business, said: ‘This contract brings together the two major developments that we have been working on for the past three years in the submarine business - Thin Flank array and Stage 5 inboard processing - and as such is a significant milestone for the company and the UK submarine enterprise.’
