ATK awarded $186 million ammunition order

Alliant Techsystems has been awarded a one-year contract worth $186 million from the US Army Joint Munitions Command to produce approximately 500 million rounds of small-calibre ammunition.

ATK (Alliant Techsystems) has been awarded a one-year contract worth $186 million to produce approximately 500 million rounds of small-calibre ammunition at the Lake City Army Ammunition Plant in Independence, Missouri.

The award from the US Army Joint Munitions Command, Rock Island, Illinois, is the fifth annual procurement under a ten-year basic production contract.

The value of the contract is expected to increase over the next several months as ATK receives additional orders to meet US Department of Defense small-calibre ammunition training and war reserve requirements for government fiscal year 2003.

ATK Lake City Small Calibre Ammunition, which manages the Lake City plant for the Army, will produce the rounds.

Production at the Lake City Army Ammunition Plant is said to remain at its highest level in 15 years following an order from the US Army last year for increased quantities of training ammunition.
