One OF UK’s top engineering institutions, Bath University, has been forced to ditch its materials science and engineering degree course because of a lack of interest from sixth formers.
From October, students will instead be offered a BEng in sports engineering, a BEng in sports technology or an MEng in sports engineering.
The university said it had introduced the replacement courses partly to boost student intake. Numbers taking pure materials science and engineering have plummeted from a high of around 40 to just 12 during the last academic year.
There will be a high materials science content in the new course said Professor Alan Bramley, adding: `This is not a degree in how to kick a football around, it is going to be highly mathematical and engineering in emphasis. In no sense is this a Mickey Mouse affair.’
