Between reality and theory

Prelude Inspection software from Matra Datavision calculates 2D and 3D deviations between measured and theoretical surface data. The programme, which can be used on its own, connects directly to co-ordinate measuring machines. It has a base module which undertakes both on- and off-line verification of mechanical parts, recognising over 200 types of geometry and associated tolerancing.

By using a surface option, engineers can compare complex free-form parts to their CAD definition. The module incorporates IGES, Unisurf and SET interfaces.

Components are aligned to the inspection reference frame by rotation, translation or symmetry. Measurements may be taken anywhere over the surface. The resultant 3D deviation is instantly calculated and displayed. The system also provides automatic alignment of components and will minimise positioning errors by undertaking `best-fit’ operations.
