Big Ben’s 1929, out of time, chime train replicated by retooled Renold

During maintenance of Big Ben it was found that the chain driving the clock’s chime train was reaching the end of its wear life and would have to be replaced.

Originally supplied in 1929 by The Coventry Chain Company, the one-inch pitch chain was no longer a standard size.

Renold Chain had taken over the company in 1930, and was able to uncover the original engineering drawings for the chain. The company was then able to modify its tooling and replicate the chain that had originally been supplied.
