Ware based mechanical handling engineer Birch Engineering (Cuffley) has constructed a futuristic stainless steel sculpture which has been erected outside the County Court in Chelmsford.

Designed by environmental artist and sculptor Diane Maclean, the 5.5m work represents the three rivers running through Chelmsford, the Chelmer, the Can and the Wid.

Three one-metre wide vertical, curving, polished stainless steel elements are set in a triangular formation. One of these displays lines of blue LED lights on its inner edges, which in turn reflect onto the remaining elements.

The curved structures were designed by the sculptor from stainless steel sheet supplied by ThyssenKrupp in Germany. They were then supplied to Birch for welding into a ladder formation. Birch Engineering also completed all electrical work on the sculpture, which was erected in approximately three months.

Birch Engineering have been manufacturing Diane Maclean’s stainless steel sculptures since 1990.
