Birmingham hospital to receive two radiotherapy machines

Shropshire-based Oncology Systems is to install two TomoHD radiotherapy treatment machines at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham, using funds raised by a capital appeal by the hospital’s official charity and provided by the University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust.

The TomoHD machines will be installed by the autumn and the first patients treated before the end of this year.

The TomoTherapy TomoHD treatment system is a combined radiotherapy machine and CT scanner that is said to deliver ultra precise, targeted image-guided intensity modulated radiotherapy.

It enables clinicians to create 3D maps of the size and location of a tumour, plotting its exact contours and where it is in relation to sensitive and healthy tissue.
