Birse receives contracts to build coast protection works

Birse, a Balfour Beatty company, has been appointed for the design and construction of Anchorsholme and Rossall coast protection works in north-west England.

The works — involving two separate contracts procured by a multi-coastal authority team comprising Blackpool Council, Wyre Council and Fylde Borough Council — will involve almost 3km of coastal defence on the Fylde Coast and are valued in the region of £55m.

The Anchorsholme Coast Protection Scheme, for Blackpool Council, will involve the reconstruction of approximately 1km of coastal defences in the form of a concrete seawall and a two-tier promenade with landscaping. This scheme is the final stage in the renewal of Blackpool’s sea defences and is the continuation of Birse’s previous successful works at the north, south and central sections.

The Rossall Coastal Defence Scheme, for Wyre Council, will involve the reconstruction of around 1.9km of coastal defence. It will include rock armour/concrete seawall, rock/timber groynes and landscaping details. This work is also a continuation of Birse’s previous three phases of work along the coastal frontage.
