Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) has received an order for four LPG (liquefied petroleum gas) carriers from the UK’s BP Shipping, the shipping division of BP.
According to MHI, the new double-hulled ships will have a capacity of 83,000 cubic metres and are expected to be used east of Suez.
MHI will build all four units at its Nagasaki Shipyards and Machinery Works, with delivery of the first ship scheduled for mid-2006.
MHI has built 19 tankers for BP since 1970, but today’s order is the first for an LPG carrier. The order from BP Shipping marks Japan’s largest LPG carrier order on record.
