B&W set to receive US DoE funding for SMR development

The Babcock & Wilcox Company (B&W) has been selected as the winner of the US Department of Energy’s (DoE) Small Modular Reactor (SMR) Licensing Technical Support Program. The company will receive funding that will support the accelerated development of its mPower SMR technology.

The mPower SMR is designed to provide 180MW of electricity and is based on advanced integral pressurised water technology that incorporates robust, passive safety protection systems within a fully underground containment structure.

The design is said to improve plant security, mitigate potential environmental impact and the effects of external events.
