Cables to assist wind farm

Prysmian has been awarded a €93m (£73m) strategic contract by Fluor to supply high technology cables for the Greater Gabbard offshore wind farm project. When completed in 2010 the Greater Gabbard, under development by Airtricity, will be the world’s largest offshore facility.

The scope of the project includes approximately 175km of 132kV XLPE cablest that will be used to connect the Inner Gabbard and Galloper offshore platforms located approximately 26km off the Suffolk coast, to onshore cables at Sizewell substation. The cables will transmit 504MW of power, generated from 140 wind turbine generators, which is sufficient to power up to 415,000 homes.

Prysmian has also recently been involved with EON Netz and Dong Energy for the development of major offshore wind farms in Germany and the UK.

Capital expenditure forecasted for the development of new off shore wind farm projects in Europe is $15bn (£7.6bn) in the 2008-2012 period, with governments continuously stimulating investments.
