Cake decoration – art, science, or engineering challenge? SH Muffett has won a £1 million contract to manufacture a revolutionary new machine which produces customised cakes. The machine offers bakers and cake decorators the capability to print precise, inkjet high quality images onto the surface of a cake using edible food dyes. The machine, we are told, will print with absolute clarity onto everything from a peppermint to a blancmange, from cheese to ice cream. SH Muffett became involved after prototype machines suffered problems with the drive unit/gearbox. Muffett engineers identified the problem as being with the pitch of the rack and pinion. They calculated the pitch required, and supplied the correct rack and pinion, which recitifed the problem.
