Chinese brewhouse takes the fieldbus route

Cheshire based, Briggs Automation has won a turnkey contract to supply a process control system for a 4 million hectalitre/year brewhouse operated by Zhejiang Ching Hua Brewery Co in Xiaoshan City.

Cheshire based, Briggs Automation provides total integration solutions for process automation projects in the food, pharmaceutical, cosmetics and brewing industry. The company has just won a turnkey contract to supply a process control system for a 4 million hectalitre/year brewhouse operated by Zhejiang Ching Hua Brewery Co in Xiaoshan City, Hangzhou Province of the People’s Republic of China.

The specification for the process control system required the utilisation of modern transmission techniques, the provision of a cost-effective solution with low maintenance, efficient fault-finding and a high degree of system accuracy. The brewhouse management also required the use of local language character sets in the displays.

Briggs’ General Manager, Nigel Moorby’s first choice was to use Fieldbus technology, choosing the Profibus PA communication system, since all of the components required were available. Endress + Hauser was chosen to supply the instrumentation because the company was able to offer the full range of devices required, backed by wide-ranging experience and international service support.

Moorby considered ASI the most suitable bus system for the digital inputs, as it was easily integrated into the chosen Profibus network. For maximum efficiency, one DP circuit was used for Profibus PA field transmitters and one for ASI switches.

The complete brewhouse operation, including a dry goods facility, was to be controlled from a single control room, using a system designed around the Siemens S7 range of PLCs and SCADA equipment.

Endress + Hauser provided a variety of Profibus PA instrumentation including 16 Deltapilot S hydrostatic level transmitters , eight Deltabar S differential pressure transmitters, six Promag electromagnetic flowmeters and 34 Omnigrad temperature transmitters.

Not only did Endress + Hauser supply the instrumentation for the brewhouse, but also commissioning and maintenance software, Commuwin II. This package allows all devices to be remotely configured from a central engineering station.

Zhejiang Ching Hua Brewery achieved a higher degree of system accuracy with the new installation. A typical total loop accuracy from an analogue system is ±1.5, whereas a typical digital network provides a factor of ten better (±0.15). The digital system also boasts improved diagnostic capabilities.

Moorby estimates that this technology achieved a 25-30% reduction on the cost of installation materials, for example cables and junction boxes. This also resulted in a 25-30% reduction in installation time.

The Profibus PA system, coupled with the use of Commuwin II, lead to reduced plant commissioning time-scales, allowing for a complete system check at the Briggs’ plant in Cheshire before shipment to China.

Together, Endress + Hauser and Briggs Automation provided the brewhouse with a complete and efficient communication system to bring its technical know-how into the 21st Century.
