Originally developed and built by Siemens, the design of Germany’s Intercity Express (ICE) is constantly being updated, and a leading manufacturer of train door systems turned to Hoerbiger-Origa to provide an intelligent solution for the automatic doors on both the Intercity Express and the Berlin S-Bahn.
Automation had to be reliable; capable of operating a 130kg door under widely varying conditions and current fluctuations. In addition, the solution had to be easy to install and maintain within a restricted space, and flexible enough to be installed in both single and double door systems.
Hoerbiger-Origa set about designing an automatic door system which, for the ICE trains, is built around an adapted pneumatic rodless cylinder. The safe movement of the door towards the end position is achieved by extending the internal cushioning of the cylinder by 80mm, since the use of external shock absorbers is not possible given the space constraints of the installation.
With safety of paramount importance, a special end cap with an air vent valve is fitted, in connection with a logic element (AND-valve). This allows Personnel to manually open and close the doors in case of emergency.
To operate the external double wing doors on Berlin’s S-Bahn (tramway) trains, the original solution used a rodless cylinder fitted with an external guide onto which a small, fourfold control block was mounted. Now, this has been developed into a pre-assembled drive unit, designed around the AZ rodded cylinder, and installed directly into the train door frame. Further features include a baffle plate for constant speed at de-pressurised new start, restrictors for the cylinder speed, and a pressure balancer and controller for optimal functioning.
